Taking freelance writing to the next level

I have always thought of taking my passion for writing and turning it into a profitable career. However, it is not so easy to gain a position amidst the existing competition. Freelance writing is the only thing I can rely on for now, as getting personal publications are difficult to get. I have considered beginning my writing career in providing Wikipedia editing services. Writing, editing and drafting Wikipedia pages are not as boring as I thought it would be. Since I have written a number of wiki pages for free, I was considering to charge my clients once I have built my portfolio. Do you think it is a great idea?
